MBA Vs. PGDM

PGDM vs MBA

There is a myth about PGDM (Postgraduate Diploma Management) and MBA (Master of Business Administration) that they are very different from each other, let me clear you that they both are pretty much the same, and only difference is that PGDM is Diploma program for Management and the MBA is Master degree program for Management.

MBA is a university based degree program which is approved by University Grants Commission (UGC), which is authorized to provide MBA degrees. On the other hand PGDM is IIM based diploma program and offered by autonomous institutes, which is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Institutes like IIM, XLRI offer PGDM programs but do not provide with MBA degrees because these institutes or Business schools are not affiliated to any university.

There is not much difference in PGDM or MBA if your goal is to join the corporate field. Both courses aim to train you in management and administration.

MBA Vs. PGDM

If we look at the Academic differences, in MBA course there is more theoretical knowledge of management, whereas PGDM focuses on technical aspects, providing more exposure to business situations. There is an advantage of PGDM that it is offered by autonomous institutes, they frequently upgrade syllabus according to the new trends and changes in business management. Colleges that provide MBA courses have no authority to change the syllabus. MBA is more academic and theoretical in nature whereas PGDM is more practical in nature.

Industry treats MBA and PGDM graduates equally, even at a global level; the industry gives pretty much the same treatment to PGDM and MBA graduates. Industry doesn’t focus on the degrees, but are concerned more about an individual’s skills. Doing MBA or PGDM will have same impact on your career. If you graduate with a good college then your starting salary package will be high. You have to choose your college or B-School for PGDM or MBA very carefully.

If you want to pursue Ph.D. after MBA, you must have either an MBA degree or a PGDM from AICTE approved institute only but not all institutes or university accept PGDM as masters for the admission in Ph.D. programs. You will be eligible for Ph.D. only if you complete MBA.
